Edward Curtis Wells was Boeing's chief engineer during the company's most transformative era. He led the design of the B-17 Flying Fortress, the strategic bomber that became the backbone of the American daylight bombing campaign over Europe. Wells went on to oversee the B-29 Superfortress, the most technologically advanced aircraft of World War II and the bomber that ended the war. His engineering philosophy of methodical improvement over radical innovation defined Boeing's approach for decades.
