R.E. Bishop succeeded Geoffrey de Havilland as chief designer and created the de Havilland Mosquito, the 'Wooden Wonder' that outran every fighter in the Luftwaffe. Built from balsa and plywood when metal was scarce, the Mosquito served as bomber, fighter, pathfinder, photo-reconnaissance, and anti-shipping strike aircraft. It achieved the lowest loss rate of any aircraft in Bomber Command, vindicating de Havilland's controversial decision to build a wooden combat aircraft.
