Largest commercial aircraft ever built, a double-deck superjumbo that redefined the hub-and-spoke model.
History
The Airbus A380 was conceived as a direct challenge to Boeing's monopoly on the very large aircraft market held by the 747. The double-deck configuration could carry up to 853 passengers in an all-economy layout, though most airlines configured it for 400-550 in mixed classes. Emirates became the largest operator, using the type's capacity to consolidate traffic through its Dubai hub. The A380 introduced new standards for passenger comfort with its spacious cabin, lower noise levels, and amenities like onboard bars and showers in first class. Despite technical success, the trend toward smaller, more efficient twin-engine aircraft limited sales, and Airbus ended production in 2021 after delivering 254 aircraft.
